First Stop: Kasangati Prison

by Jimmy on June 27, 2009

First ministry stop on this trip is Kasangati Prison. I’ve been here twice before. The living conditions here are pretty bad. Many in the US would probably call this torture. I’m sure the prisoners that our government is accused of torturing have it much, much better than the prisoners here.

There were not enough guards for the men prisoners to be let out of their cells. Many men are pack into small cells. It is hot. No shade. No air-conditioner. No fan. No TV. No workout room. No soap. No beds.

The women were out in the courtyard. Their blankets were spread out on the ground – looked as if they had just washed them. Most are worn out. Some very small pieces of foam were laying out as well. Douglas told me that the foam was their beds.

There were about 25 women present. Some had small babies with them. According to Douglas, most are here for petty theft, beating up the second wife, or neglecting their children. The women gathered in a circle and Pam spoke to them from the story of Zaccheus. Many are enrolled in Bible Way. Some new ones were enrolled.

These folk are truly neglected. Forgotten. I’m glad we had a chance to meet them and share the love and gospel of Jesus with them.
